Padel in the North West is booming. Is it bigger than London?

Is Manchester Taking Over Padel in the UK?

Padel – the fastest-growing racket sport globally, a blend of Tennis and Squash, has exploded worldwide, and the UK has jumped on this wave and embraced it in a huge way. Every day, we come across various articles and the latest announcement that another Padel court has been approved, and thankfully, for those living outside of the nations capital, many are outside of London. London, being the country’s capital, has often been seen as the home of British sport, with national stadiums, centres of excellence, and the Olympics being held there. As expected, Padel has spread across the capital, too. However, the North is fighting back, and Manchester is making its mark on the UK Padel scene. Well known for its sporting prowess and success on the international stage, Manchester is quickly becoming the go-to city for Padel enthusiasts. So, the question remains: is Manchester taking over the UK Padel scene?

The Rise of Padel in the UK.

Padel has grown exponentially over the last decade, with various sources quoting an increase in the number of Padel courts at a rate of over well over 100%. The secret to its popularity is its ease and enjoyment. If anyone has turned up to a tennis court with no experience, like me, they probably weren’t very good and didn’t have the best of times. Padel is the complete opposite – no matter your experience level you will still have a great time and leave with a smile on your face.

Until recently, Padel courts weren’t easy to find outside of major metropolitan areas, and were often found at high end sports clubs. Its clear that its popularity caught the eye of investors and they have taken the popular sport to other areas of the country, including major cities such as Manchester, which is now catching up with London and even overtaking the capital in terms of enthusiasm and growth.

The question that could then be asked is – Why pick Manchester?

Firstly, Manchester has a long and rich sporting history and a renowned obsession for sport. It is home to two of the largest and most successful football clubs of all time, an international cricket ground, and lets not forget some great universities which attract athletes and sportsmen from all over the world.

Community Spirit – something that is a huge part of Padel is seen in Manchester in abundance. This willingness to mix with strangers definitely helps the spread of Padel. So when you’re signing up for your latest game, on Playtomic, playing with complete strangers is an attraction rather than a daunting proposition

Perhaps some of the Padel club owners and investors could shed light on why they think Manchester has embraced Padel with such enthusiasm…..

Manchester's Role in Growing Padel Nationally

The growth of Padel in Manchester has not only been a boost for local players but has also had a great influence on Padel nationally. With what seems likely the weekly opening of a new Padel club in Manchester, we have started to see an increase in the number of tournaments being held in the city. Tournaments such as the All Star Pro-Am Padel tour attracted the best players from up and down the country, international players, and even celebrities such as Joleon Lescott and Kyle Walker. This is a significant shift for a sport that once struggled to gain visibility in the UK outside of London.

The success of Manchester's Padel clubs is also prompting other cities in the north to invest in the sport, helping to increase Padel’s reach across the UK. No longer is Padel seen as a sport confined to elite clubs in the south; it’s becoming a widely accessible activity that anyone can enjoy, thanks in large part to cities like Manchester leading the charge.

Challenges and Opportunities

Although Padel is growing at a rapid rate of knots, it still faces many challenges. Like any rapidly growing sport, it still requires public awareness. Whenever Padel comes up in a conversation, it is often met with mixed responses – from, Yes, I play it all the time, I can’t believe I’ve only just started playing it – to – I think I saw something like that online. For those who have thought about playing Padel but haven’t done so yet, the cost is something that is often mentioned and remains a barrier for some, especially throughout the winter with limited spaces in indoor courts.

However, with the sport’s growing popularity and increasing investment in infrastructure, Manchester—and the UK as a whole—are well-positioned to overcome these obstacles. With its thriving community and love of sports, Manchester is on course to solidify its place as the Padel capital of the UK.

The Future of Padel in Manchester

The momentum behind Padel in Manchester shows no signs of slowing down. As more people discover the sport, the city is likely to see a continued rise in both participation and investment. It’s entirely possible that Manchester could soon rival—and even overtake—London as the UK’s number one Padel destination.

For those living in or visiting Manchester, now is the perfect time to get involved in Padel. With excellent facilities, a welcoming community, and plenty of opportunities to play, Manchester is paving the way for the future of this exciting sport in the UK.

Time will tell whether Manchester truly becomes the focal point of Padel in the UK but either way its great to have such a number of high quality Padel Clubs in and around the city.
